How will HLS video works in RSS feeds? (alternateEnclosure tag)
Hey, friends. I'm just catching up on some of the podcast index chatter on Mastodon. John Spurlock has this great thread where he talks about all of the podcast hosting companies that support the new HLS video in Apple Podcast Standard. Transistor is one of them. At one point, Kevin Finn asks, did you see any of these new shows also using podcast alternate enclosure in their public feed?
Justin Jackson:Spurlock says, negatory, not even in the transistor shows. Then Dave said, I thought, am I Justin? That's me. Said alternate enclosure would be in their feeds. Yes.
Justin Jackson:So I just wanna clarify. We enabled this on two of Steven Robles' shows, Movies on the Side and Primary Technology. Initially, we didn't put it in the alternate enclosure tag, but that's always been the plan. Our plan is that folks will be uploading video and we will be distributing that wherever they want the video to go. YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcast HLS.
Justin Jackson:But if they are doing HLS with Apple, the default is going to be just to add that same HLS manifest into the alternate enclosure in their feeds. That will be the default on transistor moving forward. Just updated Steven's episodes now, so that the HLS manifests are in the alternate enclosure tags. So we can watch them here on fountain. And that works perfect.
Justin Jackson:It's still a little manual behind the scenes right now, so that's why it wasn't in there from day one. Yes. Just to clarify, anybody doing HLS video for Apple, the default, if they have HLS video hosting on transistor, will be that we will just automatically add those HLS manifest URLs into the alternate enclosure tag.
